Will Sania Mirza grace Siliguri?

Will Sania Mirza grace Siliguri?

SILIGURI, Nov. 29. — Will she or won’t she? The announcement made by former Davis Cup captain and technical director of Videocon Challenge Tennis Tournament, Mr Jaidip Mukherjea that Sania Mirza will not take part in the singles match she was scheduled to play at the Siliguri Indoor Stadium during the tournament here tomorrow has cast a doubt over the appearance of the teenage icon at the meet. Fans of the tennis star in the region have started wondering whether Sania would play at the stadium at all.
"The actual intention of the organisers is shrouded in mystery," observed Mr Shekar Chaudhuri, 29, of Ashrampara in Siliguri.

Shekhar said: "At first, it was announced that the draw would include four players and Sania Mirza would be one of them. It was then declared that Sania would play in two matches. Again, it was decided that the pair of Sikha Uberoi and Rohan Bopanna would cross swords with Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupati. Now, the organisers say Sikha Uberoi and Mahesh Bhupati will take on Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna and that Sania has been replaced by Ankita Bamri for the singles match."

Most tennis fans in Siliguri feel that the earlier announcements were made to make the event successful. "They were made with an eye on the ticket counter," said Mr Jagadish Roy, 34, of Hakimpara.
