Sania Mirza's views create a big racket

The 19-year-old Mirza, India's latest sporting icon, faced protests from crowds that burned her effigies after she advocated safe sex at a leadership summit this month in New Delhi. She said then that, "You don't want me to tell you that you have safe sex, whether it is before or after marriage.

"Everyone must know what he or she is doing."

Small groups of a Hindu nationalist students' body also opposed her comments.

After the protests, however, she issued a statement saying, "I could not possibly justify premarital sex, as it is a very big sin in Islam and one which I believe will not be forgiven by Allah."

On Sunday night, reporters wanted to know more of her views on the subject at a news conference.
