Will Sania Mirza grace Siliguri?
SILIGURI, Nov. 29. — Will she or won’t she? The announcement made by former Davis Cup captain and technical director of Videocon Challenge Tennis Tournament, Mr Jaidip Mukherjea that Sania Mirza will not take part in the singles match she was scheduled to play at the Siliguri Indoor Stadium during the tournament here tomorrow has cast a doubt over the appearance of the teenage icon at the meet. Fans of the tennis star in the region have started wondering whether Sania would play at the stadium at all.
"The actual intention of the organisers is shrouded in mystery," observed Mr Shekar Chaudhuri, 29, of Ashrampara in Siliguri.
Shekhar said: "At first, it was announced that the draw would include four players and Sania Mirza would be one of them. It was then declared that Sania would play in two matches. Again, it was decided that the pair of Sikha Uberoi and Rohan Bopanna would cross swords with Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupati. Now, the organisers say Sikha Uberoi and Mahesh Bhupati will take on Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna and that Sania has been replaced by Ankita Bamri for the singles match."
Most tennis fans in Siliguri feel that the earlier announcements were made to make the event successful. "They were made with an eye on the ticket counter," said Mr Jagadish Roy, 34, of Hakimpara.

Organisers rue Sania Mirza's unavailability for Dubai tourney
Organisers of the seventh Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge are disappointed after failing in their attempts to have Indian ace Sania Mirza in the 75,000 dollar event from January 12 to 18.
Though they have received over 270 entries so far, the organisers said it would have been great to have Sania in the tournament which will be held at the Al Habtoor Grand Resort and Spa tennis courts.
Tournament Referee Hany El Khafief said the event would have been a perfect build up to the Australia Open but Sania was pre-occupied with other plans.
''Mirza intends to travel to Australia to train there during the entire month of December before the season opens in January,'' he revealed.
Hoping Sania's absence won't take sheen off the event, he said, ''Still the lineup is strong enough to offer a good show for tennis enthusiasts.'' The field included three players from the top 50, he informed.
Tournament director Farid Al Jayyussi was also elated with the record entry.
Sania Mirza slips to No. 32 in WTA Ranking
Recuperating from a back injury and bracing for a new season, Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza slipped one place to the 32nd spot in the latest WTA singles rankings announced on Monday.
The 19-year-old Hyderabadi, who will be back in the court again in the Watson's Water Challenge Women's Invitational in Hong Kong in January, was ranked 31st last week and she boasts of 924.25 rank points.
Despite being out of action, Sania, however, maintains her doubles ranking of 113 with 334.50 ranking points.
US-based Shikha Uberoi, meanwhile, improved his position by a couple of rungs to finish 146th with 238.75 rankings points, according to information received here on Monday.

Bhupathi unsure when Sania can play alongside him
Bangalore, Nov 28 (PTI) Doubles specialist Mahesh Bhupathi today said he did not want to put undue pressure on the matter of playing with young tennis talent Sania Mirza in the mixed doubles. "This (pairing up with Sania) is something we don't prefer to put pressure on. When it's supposed to happen, it will happen," Bhupathi told PTI.
When it was pointed out that in the past he had indicated to play alongside her after the teenager breaks into top 50 and now she was in top 30s, he said "There is still some possibility. I know her ranking; I am her manager".
"It (pairing up with Sania Mirza) could happen in Australia (Australian Open); it could happen in 2008. I am not going to put a time-frame to it. When we are ready to play, we will play," he added. PTI
WTA tour event shifts from Hyderabad to Bangalore
Bangalore, Nov 28 (PTI) India's first WTA tour event has moved out of Hyderabad and it will be hosted by the city from February 13 to 19.
The announcement was made by Karnataka Chief Minister N Dharam Singh, doubles specialist Mahesh Bhupathi and Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association Secretary C S Sunder Raju at a joint press conference here.
Bhupathi said the intention behind shifting the USD 175,000 (Tier III) WTA event, now christened 'Bangalore Open', was to scale up interest in other cities as well.
"In Hyderabad, the success of Sania Mirza was immense last year. The whole country watched. The aim is to move the event to a different geography and different level," Bhupathi said.
He said the focus now was to hold it here successfully. "We want to keep it here for a while".

Mothers want their daughters to be like Sania. By a strange coincidence, their daughters want to be like her too. What is this about? Well, of course, it’s about talent and grit. She may not have won a Grand Slam event yet, but she did zoom from World No. 206 to No. 31 in 2005.
Made a wild-card entry into the Australian Open, stormed her way into the fourth round of the US Open, became the only Indian to win a WTA title. And, not to forget, she’s already raked in quarter-of-a-million dollars in prize money. But equally, it’s about Sania’s style: she’s confident without being brash. She’s open yet private. She handles stardom with amazing poise but hasn’t forgotten how to be a 19-year-old. And don’t miss the nose-ringed, short-skirted, T-shirted elan with which she soars above tired debates about ‘tradition’ and ‘modernity’.

Sania Mirza to face off as starters in Hong Kong's Watson's Water Challenge Women's Invitational
Organisers named Mirza along with Russian world number eight Elena Dementieva, the Czech Republic's 15-ranked Nicole Vaidisova and China national games champion Zheng Jie, ranked 44 in the world, for the January 4-7 event.
They will join the world's top two players Lindsay Davenport and Kim Clijsters as starters for the tournament, seen as an important warm-up for the Australian Open later in the month.
Mirza, ranked 31, became the first Indian woman tennis player to enter the fourth round of a Grand Slam at the US Open in September.
Sania Mirza… whose opinion are we seeking on pre-marital sex? An 18-year-old’s?
WHOSE fault is it if Sania Mirza is asked issue-raising questions that are normally put before mature and experienced women of the world and then her answers are taken out of context and a big controversy is made out of them? Not hers, certainly; but definitely the jokers who went to her with the questions in the first place.
This is a problem with us.We take somebody, make them so important that they start believing in their bigness, and then we drop them with a thud when they don’t do or say the things we want done and said. As if they were our official spokespersons and meant to express views that were politically correct.
Sania has a bright future, says McNamara
Statesman News Service
NEW DELHI, Nov. 23. — Three-time Grand Slam Open champion Peter McNamara today predicted that India’s teen tennis sensation Sania Mirza will break into top 10 in the world rankings by 2007.
“Sania deserves better than number 30. She just needs to work hard. Sky is the limit for her. I see her there by 2007, if not earlier,” said the former world No. 7. “She has so much charisma and flair in her game that one loves to watch her play. She may not be Sharapova or Davenport, but one likes to watch her even if she loses because of her flair,” he added.

Muslims burn effigy of Sania Mirza
Vadodara, Nov 23: Not happy over her views on sex, members of the Muslim community staying in the communally sensitive Fatehpura locality here burnt the effigy of tennis star Sania Mirza yesterday.
Muslim leaders said that their religion and holy book Quran did not permit her to make such statement.
Though Sania has clarified about her views on the subject, it did not satisfy the members of the Muslim locality in the area. (Agencies)
Muslim clergy should avoid giving unnecessary Fatwa
Maulana Mirza Mohammad Athar, President of the newly formed All India Shia Personal law Board (AISPLB)has said that the Muslim clergy should avoid giving unnecessary 'Fatwa' like those over Imrana's divorce case and Sania's dress.
Speaking to the UNI on the sidelines of a general body meeting of AISPLB here lase evening, Maulana Athar said AISPLB opposes such fatwa as this was not the appropriate time.
"In Islam, there is a dress code for women and every body knows about it. There is no need to pass any remark over Sania or others about the dress as it is their personal life and no body has any right to interfere in it," he said.

Sania Mirza's views create a big racket
The 19-year-old Mirza, India's latest sporting icon, faced protests from crowds that burned her effigies after she advocated safe sex at a leadership summit this month in New Delhi. She said then that, "You don't want me to tell you that you have safe sex, whether it is before or after marriage.
"Everyone must know what he or she is doing."
Small groups of a Hindu nationalist students' body also opposed her comments.
After the protests, however, she issued a statement saying, "I could not possibly justify premarital sex, as it is a very big sin in Islam and one which I believe will not be forgiven by Allah."
On Sunday night, reporters wanted to know more of her views on the subject at a news conference.

Sania Mirza refused press conference in Cochin
Sania Mirza arrived here to inaugurate a function of Malabar gold jewelry. As she is the brand ambassador of the Malabar jewelry, arrived here to launch a new product of the jewelry along with Malayalam film actor Mohanlal. During the occasion she refused to attend a press conference.
Pairing Sania Mirza in mixed can be anytime now : Bhupathi
"Vijay (Amritraj) and Ramesh (Krishnan) played with some fineness those days. But now, men's tennis is more physical. See, Roger Federer is a physical specimen. I don't think anyone following a strict Indian diet will go on to become a world champion", he told reporters here.
On the question of partnering Sania Mirza for mixed doubles, he said it can can happen anytime now and they would anyway be pairing for Asian Games in Doha next year.
But, on his doubles partner, Bhupathi said he would go with South African Wimbledon champion Wesley Moody from the next season, with Australian open in January.
Sania deserves all the attention: Bhupathi
Kochi, November 20: Tennis has really come a long way in India and in the last five to six years it has been getting the biggest attention, thanks to Sania Mirza, who is doing really well in international circuits, doubles specialist Mahesh Bhupathi said on Sunday.
"Indian women tennis never was so deep as of now. As I can see it will grow. Wherever I go, parents want to make their children like Sania," he said when asked about the standard of women tennis.

Sania Mirza insists she opposes premarital sex
HYDERABAD, India -- Indian tennis star Sania Mirza insists she opposes premarital sex, a statement that came as crowds burned effigies of the 19-year-old Muslim over her earlier remarks advocating safe sex.
Mirza already has been criticized for her tennis clothing, usually a short skirt and midriff-revealing T-shirt. Sections of orthodox Muslim clergy say she is leading astray young Muslims, especially girls.
"I would like to clearly say on record that I could not possibly justify premarital sex, as it is a very big sin in Islam and one which I believe will not be forgiven by Allah," Mirza said Friday.
Sania Mirza denies favouring 'pre-marital sex'
Her clarification came a day after strong protests from Muslim community and also various other organisations over the reported comments made in New Delhi on Wednesday.
"Attributing a viewpoint that is totally contrary to what I believe in and what I stand for as a Muslim and as an Indian girl is a creation of media to sensationalise a story and such sensitive issues needed to be confirmed before making such attempts," she said.

Sania, Karthikeyan talk about sex
"Look, whether it's before or after marriage, people should have safe sex. And about pre-marriage sex, you can't stop people and hence the best way is to play it safe," said the teenager, who shared the dais with Miss Universe Natalie Glebova and formula one driver Narain Karthikeyan.
Karthikeyan, meanwhile, threw his weight behind South Indian actress Khushboo, whose remarks on pre-marital sex has snowballed into a major controversy.
Sania Mirza distances herself from Khushboo
Distancing herself from her reported support to south Indian film star Khushboo on the issue of pre-marital sex, tennis star Sania Mirza Friday said her belief was otherwise.
Maintaining that she was deeply pained at the maligning of her image and making a non-issue into a serious controversy by misquoting her on the pre-marital sex issue, she said in a statement that "they were totally false connotations about my justifying pre-marital sex".

Sania Mirza not happy about short-skirts controversy in India
NEW DELHI -- Indian tennis star Sania Mirza says it is scary that her dress on the court, usually a short skirt and a midriff revealing T-shirt, was becoming controversial in her country, a newspaper reported Thursday.
Sections of orthodox Muslim clergy say she is leading young Muslims, especially girls, astray.
India's Sunni Ulema Board, a Muslim organization, issued an edict in October demanding Mirza, a Muslim, cover up during her matches. The group described her tennis clothes as "un-Islamic."
"As long as I am winning, people shouldn't care whether my skirt is six inches (15 centimeters) long or 6 feet (two meters) long," the Hindustan Times newspaper quoted Mirza as saying at a leadership forum organized by the daily.
"How I dress is very personal thing," said Mirza, who turned 19 on Wednesday.
Does it matter if my skirt is 6 inches: Sania Mirza
New Delhi, November 17: Sania Mirza finally broke her enforced silence on the controversy over her on-court attire, which was slammed by hardline Muslim leaders saying, "What I do at home, what I wear, is no one else’s business".
“How does it matter whether my skirt is six feet long or six inches,” Sania said at the ‘Hindustan Times Leadership Summit’ on Wednesday.
A Muslim cleric had issued a few weeks ago fatwa over the 19-year old wearing short skirts while playing.
Editors comment:
Dogs bark everywhere. Who cares? There are many Bollywood Muslim stars exposing everything. Even acting in movies are agianst Muslim laws. Why not these people go after them? That's not un-Islamic? Instead of encouraging this young girl to achieve top 10 place in tennis, these people are making trouble. These kind of people are the real CURSE to the entire community. What do you think? Sania Mirza to celebrate 19th birthday at home
HYDERABAD: India's tennis ace Sania Mirza, who rose to dizzy heights of the game during the year, will spend a quiet "closed door" birthday with her family here on Tuesday, her mother said.
Though career-wise it has been a successful year - with her WTA ranking lifted from 170 to a record 31 - the family has decided to opt for simple celebrations at home instead of a public extravaganza. Sania will celebrate her 19th birthday with father Imran Mirza, mother Naseema and younger sister Anam at their residence in Jubilee Hills neighbourhood.
"It will be a quiet birthday," Naseema told IANS. "It will be a closed-door family affair.
"There are no plans to have any sponsorship announcement on that day," said Naseema, who along with Imran played a key role in shaping their daughter's career...
Top-10 ranking by 2006 end a realistic target for Sania
From wild card to draw card, the year gone by has truly been one of fairy tale success for Sania Mirza who celebrates her 19th birthday tomorrow.
It was around this time last year that the teenager earned a wild card entry into the main draw of the Australian Open. Twelve months from then, she is not just ensured of a direct entry but would also be a major crowd puller at the first Grand Slam on the calendar.
The Cindrella of Indian tennis, however, has no grandiose ambitions for the new year.
"It has been a great year for me. I hope the new one also turns out to be similarly good, if not better," Sania told PTI.

Sania Mirza sets up date with Crorepati
Now it is turn for the former Miss Universe Lara Dutta and tennis sensation Sania Mirza to be with Amitabh Bachchan in the famous Star TV program KBC 2. Their winnings will go to the widows of the Indian Air Force personnel, however the amount won by the duo is still a top secret . If you believe rumors then ,Sania and Lara pocketed the grand 1 crore prize, and then lose money by giving the wrong answer!
Star’s COO Samir Nair says, "We’ve got Sania Mirza and Lara together as a Children’s day special. Why these two? Well, Sania needs no justification. She’s a youth icon, and though she’s the queen of endorsements, she needs no endorsement. Getting her on the hot seat was a challenge, and we proved equal to it. We needed a spunky spirited woman of today to complement Sania on the hot seat. Lara fitted the bill perfectly. She’s young, articulate and intelligent. They’re very very watchable together. Both Lara and Sania represent the spirit of youth and are role models for kids this children’s day. Like Sania, Lara started very young. She became Miss Universe when she was in her teens. Ask Mr Bachchan, Lara and Sania are dynamite together."

Sania Mirza's meteoric rise in international tennis continued as she reached a career-high 31st in the latest WTA rankings despite being out of action for the last three weeks.
The Indian tennis ace moved up three places in the women's singles rankings with 929.75 points.
